Problem

A paints and coatings manufacturer needed a modern spray booth system for its new product testing laboratory. The original project scope called for three standard bench booths, but additional performance, maintenance and control requirements were identified as the project developed.

The customer needed three 4-foot-wide by 7-foot-high bench booths with LED lighting, fold-down tabletops for easier filter changes and two-stage exhaust filtration. The system also needed password-protected face velocity settings, automatic airflow adjustment as filters became loaded, visual dirty-filter alerts and the ability to shut down the booths when filter replacement was required.

Solution

C.H. REED partnered with RTT Finishing Solutions to develop three custom laboratory bench spray booths equipped with RTT SmartTouch Control Panels. The controls allow authorized users to establish the desired face velocity while preventing unauthorized changes through password protection.

SmartTouch continuously monitors booth face velocity and automatically increases fan speed as the exhaust filters become loaded. A visual light tree alerts operators when filters require attention, and the system can shut down the booth when filter replacement becomes necessary.

The control panel also displays static-pressure readings that can be exported and used to establish filter-change limits. Built-in hour meters monitor critical system devices to support preventive-maintenance scheduling.

Through a local-area-network connection and the SmartConnect application, the customer can remotely monitor booth status from compatible Android, Apple and PC devices. The completed system delivered precise airflow management, easier filter maintenance and greater visibility into the performance of each laboratory spray booth.
